Geological Archives

What goes on in a geological archive?

Read left to right, top to bottom, our books are made up of rows of geological cores, drawn from several hundred feet below ground.

The cores on which I am currently working have been selected from sites across the state, and were collected in the 1970s.

We are rehousing them into new storage containers, so that they may be accessed by researchers.

The cores are a record of time and events, and tell us about the stratigraphy of the region and how the surface of the earth was formed. There are often areas where mineralization has occurred.

Once they are rehoused, they will be photographed and described, and returned to a site in the core library.

My year in the archives is coming to an end this fall, and I am looking forward to new articles and new projects in the near future!
